Sirius
Sirius is the brightest star system found within the Earth's sky. At only 9 light years away, it is also one of the closest stars. The name Sirius originates from a Greek word, Seirios, which means 'scorching.' The Greeks noticed that the star rose and set with the Sun during the hottest time of the year. Additionally, Sirius played an important role for the Egyptians; the star's rising occurred at the same time as the Nile's annual flooding. The Egyptians even based a goddess on the star named Sopdet.
