Habitat: Eastern deciduous forest & tallgrass prairie

Season: June-September

Active Chemical Ingredient: Quercetin (C₁₅H₁₀O₇)

Uses: Yarrow can be used as an astringent to stop bleeding and protect large wounds such as gunshot wounds, deep puncture wounds, bear attacks, and axe wounds.

Preparation: Make a tincture or poultice and apply to the affected wound.

Sphagnum Moss

Sphagnum Andersonianum

Habitat: Eastern deciduous forest

Season: Yearlong

Active Chemical Ingredient: Ammonium nitrogen (NH₄-N )

Uses: The large moisture absorbption capacity makes for an excellent bandage for heavy bleeding wounds, such as gunshot wounds, deep puncture wounds, bear attacks, and axe wounds.

Preparation: Cut a sizeable amount of the moss and wrap it firmly, not too tight, around the bleeding wound as you would a bandage.

Eastern Prickly Pear

Opuntia humifusa

Habitat: Tallgrass prairie

Season: Early summer- fall

Active Chemical Ingredient: Leucine (C₆H₁₃NO₂) stimulates tissue synthesis.

Uses: The prickly pear can be used as a bandage for large wounds such as, gunshot wounds, deep puncture wounds, bear attacks, and axe wounds.

Preparation: Use a knife to slice pads out of the cactus flesh and apply as a poultice.
